Electricity demand dwindles amid lockdown: official

Demand for electricity has dropped to 1,700MW from 2,000MW in 2019 and has yet to post a significant pick-up even as factories and hotels in designated yellow zones resume business, according to a senior official at the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
Nearly 100 factories have reopened after a short hiatus due to the government s recent lockdown of Phnom Penh and Takmao town, according to a Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training spokesman.
Victor Jona, director-general for Energy, told The Post that to ensure balanced supply and consumption and respond to “economic problems”, a 400MW fuel oil power plant in Kandal province s Lvea Em district could be powered down, as could some of the turbines at hydropower dams.
The high number of new Covid-19 infections detected each day is due to the use of the Rapid Antigen Covid-19 test kits, especially in the red zones where most of the new cases originate, according to a senior Ministry of Health official.

Military set to arm Red Zone residents with Covid-19 jabs

The Ministry of National Defence is set to kick off its 30-day vaccination drive in the capital’s designated red zones, with up to 450,000 people expected to receive their first dose starting May 1.
Ith Sarath, Deputy Commander and Joint Chief of Staff of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), announced the campaign on April 29 during a special forum broadcast on the National Television of Cambodia (TVK).

A total of 50,000 doses of Sinovac Covid-19 vaccines that Cambodia had purchased from China touched down in Phnom Penh on the morning of April 17. Ministry of Health secretary of state Youk Sambath was present at the Phnom Penh International Airport to receive the vaccines, according a broadcast by the National Television of Cambodia.
