Philippines drops further in World Press Freedom Index

MANILA, Philippines With a global score of 45.64, the Philippines dropped two notches to 138 out of 180 countries in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index drawn up by Paris-based media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF). In a statement, RSF cited the Duterte administration’s “grotesque judicial harassment campaign” against news website Rappler and its chief Maria Ressa as well as Congress’ denial last year of a fresh franchise for TV giant.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines echoed the findings of RSF saying, “[We are] not at all surprised that the country consistently slid down lower in the World Press Freedom Index for the past three years,” said the national directorate in a statement. The index evaluates the press freedom situation in 180 countries and territories annually, and takes into account “people’s access to information and the obstacles to news coverage.”

Philippines: Police Arrest Journalist for Not Wearing Mask on Motorcycle

20 Apr 2021 Police in Manila recently arrested a journalist for failing to wear a sanitary mask while riding his motorcycle alone in the city, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said Monday. Lorenz Tanjoco, a broadcaster employed by the Philippine government-owned radio station “PTV 4 Radyo Pilipinas,” was riding his motorbike alone in Manila on April 16 when he was forced to stop at a police checkpoint in Pandacan district. Police officers at the checkpoint asked Tanjoco why he was not wearing a sanitary mask. “Tanjoco explained to police officers that his face mask was being blown away by the wind so he decided to remove it for a while. The officers did not accept his explanation and a commotion started afterwards,” Philippine news site Rappler reported on April 19.
