Editors note: This story was republished on April 13, 2021, the 15th anniversary of the tornado touching down in Iowa City. It was 8:35 Thursday night, April 13. I ll always remember the time because all of the clocks stopped when the electricity went out.
It s been 10 years since a tornado slammed into Gloria Walsh s Iowa City home and damaged it beyond recognition.
A reminder can still be seen in the checkerboard pattern of replaced brickwork near the top of the 930 Iowa Ave. home, rebuilt with salvaged bricks from a destroyed law firm near the old post office building downtown.
That night Walsh and her husband, Ron, were huddled in the basement of their 150-year-old home, watching for the latest weather reports. They had been out for dinner earlier in the evening and knew a storm was rolling in, but Walsh said they did not expect the tornado that would rip through downtown Iowa City and their neighborhood.
