Fisher Island Hotel History Once a one-family island home of the Vanderbilts, and later several other millionaires, Fisher Island off South Florida, was sold for development in the 1960s. A black construction laborer, Dana Albert Dorsey, who worked as a carpenter for Florida’s East Coast Railroad recognized the need to provide housing for black workers. With rental houses as it’s foundation, this grew into the first black-owned hotel in Florida – the Dorsey Hotel in Overtown. Fisher Island is in Miami-Dade County, Florida, located on a barrier island of the same name. As of 2015, Fisher Island had the highest per capita income of any place in the United States. The CDP had only 218 households and a total population of 467.

Vernon Chapel AME Church Planning, Fundraising For Major Repairs A historic Tulsa church hopes to complete major repairs this year through available grants if they can raise matching funds. Vernon Chapel AME Church is notable for partially surviving the race massacre when all but the church basement burned. Church members immediately resumed services and rebuilt the church over several years. In 2020, the National Trust for Historic Preservation offered a grant that s paying for an overhaul of the stained-glass windows. In 2021, the Fund for Sacred Places is offering $250,000 for structural repairs if Vernon AME can raise $500,000 locally. It just goes to show how much people across this country are wanting to see the rebuilding of Greenwood, and the restoration of this historic church, Vernon Chapel AME Church Rev.
