Molecular Mechanism for (In)Famous Warburg Effect in Cancer Elucidated | McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP

To embed, copy and paste the code into your website or blog: Cancer, the Emperor of All Maladies as it has been termed, has been studied for millennia.  President Nixon s War on Cancer resulted in slow but steady progress, aided by the biotechnology revolution, the development of monoclonal antibodies ( see Herceptin®) and more recent developments in immunological interventions like CAR-T cells ( But the basis for many characteristics of cancer biology remain elusive, including what is classically termed the Warburg effect, i.e., the tendency of cancer cells to be dependent upon aerobic glycolysis instead of oxidative phosphorylation even in the presence of oxygen and thus not being an adaptation for low oxygen conditions as it is in normal cells.  (Those with long memories will remember the saga of the eminent Efraim Racker being fooled by a graduate student who presented falsified evidence of a protein kinase cascade that regulated glycolysis.)  This effect has been kn

Self-controlled children tend to be healthier middle-aged adults, suggests study

ANI | Updated: Jan 06, 2021 15:49 IST Washington [US], January 6 (ANI): The findings of a study suggest that self-control, the ability to contain one s own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and to work toward goals with a plan, is one of the personality traits that makes a child ready for school. And, it turns out, ready for life as well. In a large study that has tracked a thousand people from birth through age 45 in New Zealand, researchers have determined that people who had higher levels of self-control as children were ageing more slowly than their peers at age 45. Their bodies and brains were healthier and biologically younger.

Their bodies and brains were healthier and biologically younger, the researchers report. Self-control, the ability to contain one’s own thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and to work toward goals with a plan, is one of the personality traits that makes a child ready for school. And, according to the study, which tracked a thousand people from birth through age 45 in New Zealand, ready for life as well. In interviews, the higher self-control group also showed they may be better equipped to handle the health, financial, and social challenges of later life as well. The researchers used structured interviews and credit checks to assess financial preparedness. High childhood self-control participants expressed more positive views of aging and felt more satisfied with life in middle age.

Rochester Review :: University of Rochester

Arthur Satz The Department of Music in the School of Arts & Sciences has become the first named department in the school, thanks to a gift from former music major and influential arts education leader Arthur Satz ’51. The late president of the New York School of Interior Design, Satz bequeathed the largest ever gift geared toward supporting the humanities at Rochester. In addition to establishing the Arthur Satz Department of Music, the commitment will establish a minimum of five new professorships in fields related to the humanities. Honey Meconi, a professor with appointments in the School of Arts & Sciences and at the Eastman School of Music, has been awarded the first of the professorships as the Arthur Satz Professor for the Department of Music.
