PRAGUE (AP) PRAGUE The fast-spreading coronavirus variant first identified in the U.K. has been found in the Czech Republic, a health official said Monday.
The National Institute of Public Health confirmed its findings after it announced over the weekend it was testing suspected samples.
Health Minister Jan Blatny says the variant accounts for about 10% of all sequenced samples in in the country. No further details were provided.
The country of 10.7 million has reported 891,852 confirmed coronavirus cases and 14,449 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
The daily infection rate has been in decline since Jan 6., prompting the government to allow stores selling stationary and children’s clothes and shoes to reopen. The country still remains under a tough lockdown with a nighttime curfew.

PRAGUE, Jan 18 (Reuters) - The Czech Republic has confirmed the detection of the new, more transmissible variant of coronavirus first found in Britain, the country’s National Institute of Public Health said on Monday.
A spokeswoman said the mutation had been proven in part of samples that had been sequenced, while sequencing continued on others. She said more information would be released on Tuesday.
The country of 10.7 million has been one of the worst-hit globally with 14,449 deaths so far and over 150 daily deaths most days this month.
The variant identified in Britain is believed by scientists to be more contagious, putting more pressure health systems, although it is not thought to cause more severe disease.

5,247 PCR tests were conducted yesterday, with 779 (14.8%) new positive cases confirmed.
Of the 7,657 rapid tests performed, 180 (2.4%) were positive. A total of 959 positive cases were confirmed. 988 patients are hospitalised, with 161 in intensive care, which is four fewer than the previous day. There were fourteen deaths, eleven in hospitals.
