OP Bhardwaj, India s first Dhronacharya awardee in boxing, died on Friday after battling prolonged illness and age-related issues. He was 82 and had lost his wife Santosh to ill-health about 10 days ago.
Bhardwaj was bestowed the Dronacharya award, the highest national honour in coaching, jointly with Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat (wrestling) and OM Nambiar (athletics), when it was introduced in 1985. He had been unwell for many days with a lot of health issues and was hospitalised. Age was a factor and there was also the shock of losing his wife about 10 days back, TL Gupta, a close family friend and a former boxing coach, said.

New Delhi, May 19 : Olympic-bound boxers Manish Kaushik and Satish Kumar will skip the Asian Boxing Championships starting May 21 in Dubai as they haven t fully recovered from Covid-19. It is good news for us that Kaushik s latest Covid-19 report is negative. But since he hasn t started normal training, it has been decided that he will skip the Asian meet, a coach associated with the national camp told IANS from Patiala.

Vegan boxer Tammara Thibeault is training at the National Institute of Sport in Montreal, QC in preparation for the Tokyo Summer Olympics as part of Team Canada. Thibeault, who recently became an official brand ambassador for online vegan marketplace Vejii, aims to raise worldwide awareness of the nutritional and overall health benefits of living plant-based. Raised in Saskatchewan, the 24-year-old started boxing at age nine as a way to spend more time with her brother and father, former professional football player Patrick Thibeault, who used the sport to stay in shape during his off-season.
The now six-foot Thibeault began competing at age 12 and went on to win bronze at the 2019 World Championships, gold at the 2017 Continental championships, and silver at the 2019 Lima Pan Am Games. Watching the very first women’s Olympic boxing competition at the London 2012 games inspired her to strive for Olympic glory.

Despite all these odds, Tokyo-bound javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is staying positive .
Neeraj is among the 10 individual athletes to have achieved quota places for the Tokyo Olympics, but lack of competitions is hurting the national record holder, who feels he is inching closer to the magical 90m mark ahead of the showpiece event.
