WATERTOWN â State and national investigators were at the state fire academy Wednesday as part of their investigations into what caused the death of city firefighter Peyton Lane S. Morse, who suffered a medical emergency while he was involved in a training exercise there in early March.
Investigators from Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau, or PESH, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or NIOSH, were at the site Wednesday to âofficiallyâ begin their investigations into what happened, city Fire Chief Matthew Timerman said Thursday.
It was six weeks ago when the young firefighter was found unresponsive while wearing a breathing apparatus during a training exercise at the academy in Montour Falls, near Watkins Glen, on March 3. Mr. Morse, 21, died nine days later.
A worker is suing his employer, ConAgra Foods Packaged Foods, alleging he got infected with COVID-19 at work and passed the disease on to his wife, who died of it.
Beloit resident Rigoberto Ruiz alleges the company, owned by Conagra Brands, didn’t enforce any policy to ensure that employees wore masks in its Darien plant, where he worked and which processes Birds Eye frozen vegetable products.
The lawsuit says many employees failed to wear masks in the plant within the view of supervisors, who failed to take corrective action.
“As a result, an outbreak occurred at the plant which required the plant to close and which resulted in Rigoberto Ruiz becoming infected with Covid-19,” the complaint says.
Officers contacted the trademark holder and were told that the shipment was not licensed.
According to Customs officers, the counterfeit N95 respirator face masks infringes on the NIOSH trademark.
Customs officers said counterfeiters have recognized that the demand for personal protective equipment remains high. In the first three months of calendar year 2021, Customs and Border Protection seized 18 million counterfeit face masks.
Customs and Border Protection across the nation seized more than 12 million counterfeit face masks in all of fiscal year 2020, and only 1,300 counterfeit face masks in fiscal year 2019.
In the Houston area of operations, Customs and Border Protection seized 2.1 million counterfeit masks from January to March of this year, a stark increase from the 365,000 counterfeit face masks seized in all of 2020.
