CJP asks high courts to ensure timely disposal of cases - Pakistan

Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed chairs a meeting of the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee (NJPMC) at the Supreme Court building on Wednesday. PID ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed on Wednesday directed the high courts to take necessary steps for timely disposal of cases to eliminate their backlog. He issued the directive during a meeting of the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee (NJPMC) at the Supreme Court building. Currently the country’s superior judiciary is facing a backlog of 377,380 cases whereas the district judiciary is burdened with 1.8 million cases. During the meeting, which was attended by the chief justices of the high courts and judges of the Federal Shariat Court, the chief justice of Pakistan observed that the Covid-19 pandemic had affected all spheres of life, but the judiciary took preventive measures for safeguarding judges, lawyers and litigants.

The direction was given during a meeting of the NJPMC chaired by Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chairman NJPMC. On special invitation, the meeting was attended through video link by Justice Mushir Alam, and Justice Umar Ata Bandial. During the meeting, the Chief Justice of Pakistan pointed out that in order to curtail the backlog of cases, all the high courts must take necessary actions for timely disposal of cases and the respective chief justices should assure efforts to eliminate the backlog.
