Free Prevent Diabetes Central Oregon program offered BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) Deschutes County Health Services is excited to announce upcoming dates for the Prevent Diabetes Central Oregon program. This year-long lifestyle change program can prevent adults at risk from developing Type 2 diabetes. There is no cost to participate and all classes will be offered virtually using the Zoom platform.  Classes will be offered: Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 26, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., Zoom This program is designed for adults with prediabetes a condition marked by higher-than-normal blood glucose (sugar) levels are 5 to 15 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those with normal blood glucose levels.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program will be offered beginning Thursday, March 25. Workshop participants will meet weekly from 3:30 to 4 p.m. on Zoom.  The National Diabetes Prevention Program focuses on gradual lifestyle changes and problem solving to reduce a person’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The program includes free lifestyle coaching during 16 weekly group sessions followed by every other week follow-up meetings and support for the remainder of the year-long program. Research shows that lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 58% in people with prediabetes. Michigan State University Extension has received full program recognition from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and are now offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) On-Line via Zoom. This course is designed for people who are at-risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
