How varsity lecturers feed fat on postgraduate students

Polytechnic workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) on Thursday said it has resolved to embark on a 14-day strike starting from January 14, 2021, if the federal and state governments failed to implement the NEEDS assessment report and release funds for the polytechnics as it had been doIing for the university.
The workers, who stated this immediately after its 62nd regular meeting of the General Executive Council in Abuja, also demanded the release of the scheme of service for the polytechnics, which it said had been put on hold by the National Board for Technical Education for three years without any explanation.
The Rector of the
Federal Polytechnic, Ede, in Osun State, John Adekolawole, has insisted he is still in charge. He said he was not suspended by the academic board of the institution and that the allegations against him were false.
PREMIUM TIMES reported how the academic board of the institution passed a vote of no confidence on the rector with some members of staff saying that was tantamount to a suspension.

reportedlycommunicated to the members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) by their chairman, Adekunle Masopa, at an emergency congress on Monday.
“The academic board accused the rector of flagrant dereliction of duty by absconding from office for about a month. He was also accused of the desecration of the highly respected office of the rector with the creation of a bedroom furnished with a king-size bed which has made it possible for him to be sleeping at work,” the ASUP chairman said.

Justice N.I. Buba of the Federal High Court, Enugu on Thursday sentenced a former Rector of the Enugu Polytechnic, Ndeabor, Dr Isidore Ojukwu Nwankwo, to one year in prison for N1.1 million fraud committed against some students.
The court sentenced Nwankwo to one year in prison following his prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC, in a statement on Friday, said the court in its ruling also ordered the former rector to refund the money to the students.

It was gathered that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted Nwankwo who is said to be a former Rector of Enugu Polytechnic, Ndeabor, Ani-Nri, Local Government Area on six-counts charges, bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence to the tune of N1,153,700.00, being the amount he obtained by fraud from some students of the school in contravention of Section 1(1)(a) of Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and Punishable under Section 1(3) of the Same Act.
