LAHS Introduces New Course Offering For 2021-2022 LAPS News: With course selection opening for Los Alamos High School students, upcoming juniors and seniors will have another option to fulfill their English credit requirement toward graduation. English teachers Margo Batha and Suzanne Montoya have partnered to teach Southwest Narratives: Life and Literature of New Mexico.  Click here to view the video that Montoya created to promote this new course offering. “Mrs. Montoya and I believe in the power of place-based learning and community-based education for our students,” Batha said. “We want to offer juniors and seniors at Los Alamos High School another choice for their English requirement that uses their experiences and our community in Northern New Mexico as part of their learning.”

South Floyd Elementary Teacher Attains National Certification

Superintendent of Floyd County Schools, Danny Adkins, congratulates South Floyd Elementary School’s Stephanie Lawson as the county’s newest National Board Certified Teacher.  Superintendent Adkins comments, “Congratulations Mrs. Stephanie Lawson! We are very proud of Stephanie for attaining this prestigious certification. We’re also proud of her level of commitment to her students and to her profession, especially as she has attained this in part during a pandemic. It’s an arduous process during normal school circumstances and we are quite simply impressed that she was able to complete her certification at this time in our world.”  National Board Certification for teachers consists of written assessment of content knowledge, reflection on student work samples, video and analysis of teaching practice, and documented impact and accomplishments as a teaching professional. Teachers have up to three years to complete this process.

Ashdown Public School Teacher Becomes National Board Certified Congratulations to Ashdown Gifted and Talented Coordinator Emily Freeman on becoming a National Board Certified Teacher. Mrs. Freeman is responsible for all GT students at Ashdown Public Schools. She schedules and plans all classroom activities plus guides Chess and Quiz Bowl Teams. She is also a member of the local Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Sorority and serves as treasurer, AGATE (Arkansans for Gifted & Talented Education), AAGEA (Arkansas Association of Gifted Education Administrators), ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education). Aspen teacher pushes through to earn her National Board Certification

Aspen Elementary School teacher Katie Fox recently earned her National Board Certification, a long and rigorous process that few educators nationwide complete. (Courtesy photo) Katie Fox didn’t dwell on the negative when the coronavirus pandemic forced students into a virtual classroom last spring. The Aspen Elementary School teacher immediately found a silver lining and used it to better herself as an educator. Last month, Fox learned she had earned her National Board Certification , joining a small percentage of teachers across the country to hold such recognition. “It feels like an honor to be part of a big group of teachers nationwide that have gone through this process and just have the best interests of their students at heart,” Fox said. “When COVID hit and we all shut down, we had been in different parts of our certification process and I felt ready to just sit down and write. Lyman School counselor among SD educators achieving professional certifications

The National Certified School Counselor certification recognizes counselors who demonstrate specialized knowledge and skills in school counseling. This certification shows that one has met national standards of practice, including additional education, experience, and a specialty exam. The following school counselors reported to the South Dakota Department of Education that they became National Certified School Counselors in 2020: Danielle Schonebaum, Lyman School District Lane Madsen, Rapid City Area Schools
