Former UCT vice-chancellor Stuart Saunders: Gravitas, g

I received the invitation not long after I was appointed as deputy vice-chancellor at the National University of Lesotho to deliver the graduation address at the UCT graduation ceremony of the Faculties of Art, Fine Art and Architecture. It took place on the summer afternoon of Friday, 9 December 1988. I accepted the invitation after a great deal of introspection. South Africa was in a deep state of turbulence since the declaration of a state of emergency in 1985. I wondered about the wisdom of going there from my place of safety in Lesotho. Nevertheless, as I was able to travel in and out of South Africa on a Lesotho passport as a naturalised citizen of that country, the desire to take a peep back home was strong. Also, I still held strong reservations about “white’” universities, particularly the “liberal ones” in the country of my birth. In my book they were all a part of apartheid’s institutions.

Metsing shocked by lack of Covid-19 vaccine budget

Metsing “shocked” by lack of Covid-19 vaccine budget Bereng Mpaki OPPOSITION Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) leader, Mothetjoa Metsing, says he is shocked by the government’s failure to allocate funds to procure Covid-19 vaccines for its citizens. Mr Metsing was reacting to yesterday’s budget speech by Finance Minister Thabo Sophonea. The former deputy prime minister said by failing to allocate funds to procure vaccines, the government “had missed an opportunity to make a big statement underlining its seriousness in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic”. In his budget speech, Mr Sophonea said the country would acquire the Covid-19 vaccine through the COVAX facility (a fully subsidised initiative by the World Health Organisation [WHO] to enable poor countries to get free vaccines) in April 2021.

Mohalenyane Phakela/ Herbert Moyo CONTROVERSIAL Pakistani national, Rama Qamar, who has been accused of human trafficking alongside some senior government officials, could also have been involved in the equally heinous crime of drug trafficking, the Lesotho Times has learnt. Mr Qamar’s alleged criminality prompted His Majesty King Letsie III’s Senior Private Secretary (SPS), Monehela Posholi, to implore the police to probe the controversial Pakistani because he was allegedly selling drugs to, among others, National University of Lesotho (NUL) students putting their futures at stake. But nothing seems to have been done by the police, then under the control of former Prime Minister Thomas Thabane’s coalition.
