GROSSE POINTE PARK, MI – A Michigan man suspected of stealing from a religious charity that he led was arrested today on a federal criminal complaint of fraud, embezzling and unlawfully converting funds to his own use, authorities said.
John R. Lynch, 56, of Grosse Pointe Park allegedly stole from Holy Cross, a large charitable organization based in Clinton that receives federal funds, Acting U.S. Attorney Saima S. Mohsin announced in a news release. In March 2012, Lynch became CFO of Holy Cross; in January 2015, he became its CEO.
Lynch is accused of using the organization’s funds to repair personal vehicles, install a new roof on his house, pay down a personal mortgage and make payments on a personal credit card account, authorities said. He also allegedly hired his own consulting firm and a security company he controlled to provide services to Holy Cross; he allegedly used bogus invoices
Ever since March 2020, when the pandemic was declared, schools across the United States have been ground zero in a massive, accidental experiment in universal free meals. All public school children are for the first time experiencing equal access to food, no questions asked.
But the idea of providing universal free meals requires a certain shift in thought – and budgets – that not everyone agrees with.
Why We Wrote This
Long involved in fighting childhood hunger, public schools are providing free meals this year – regardless of family income. The unplanned experiment offers clues about what works. Third in a series about hunger in America.
P-EBT Program Information
There have been many questions from parents related to the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) available through the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). This program provides benefits to children who receive free or reduced school meals under the National School Lunch Program.
District 207 determined early on to participate in the Seamless Meals Program in order to ensure we could provide meals to families. Currently, any family in District 207 can pick up 14 meals per student per week. Therefore, the district does not participate in the National School Lunch Program, which means parents of students attending Maine East, Maine South and Maine West are not eligible for P-EBT.
Itâs harder to learn when you are suffering from hunger or searching for your next meal.
But while around 30 million K-12 students in public schools are eligible for free or reduced lunch, it is a different matter when they leave. Many of those who graduate from high school and enroll in higher education institutions find they no longer have access to federal food programs.
The nationâs leading anti-hunger program for adults, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, provides food assistance to almost 44 million Americans. Only an estimated 18% of college students have been eligible for the program in recent years, with a low 3% actually receiving food assistance.
