When you call 811, you ll be connected to the New Jersey One Call center and a representative there will process your ticket and notify the nearby utilities of your work. The utility companies will then use paint and flags to mark the approximate locations of their facilities. The markout remains valid for 45 business days.
It s the law Always remember that damages to underground utilities can have huge, potentially dangerous consequences - especially now when we re all relying on our utilities so much to keep us safe and connected. Calling 811 is the first line of defense against these incidents. It is the safe and smart thing to do to keep your community safe. It s also the law.

Spring is here! With the ground ready for planting, you might be gearing up to start an outdoor project that involves digging. Before you reach for that shovel, remember to call 811 before you dig.
April is National Safe Digging Month, a designation to remind us that our land has a complex underground infrastructure of pipelines, wires and cables. Striking an underground utility line while digging can cause harm to you or those around you, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, and potentially result in fines and repair costs.
That’s why it’s important to call 811 or submit a request via our NW Natural Safety App at least two business days before digging, regardless of depth or familiarity with the property. It’s free and it’s the law.

As yards begin to bloom, some may have an eye on those long put-off gardening projects. Rocky Mountain Power urges customers to call 8-1-1 two days before doing any digging in their yards, even for something as simple as planting a tree.
“Installing a mailbox or post for a deck or planting a tree are among the many commonplace projects that should trigger a call to 8-1-1,” said Jeremy Gee, Rocky Mountain Power’s director of health and safety. “Those may seem like simple, harmless maintenance projects, but the hazards are very real. Hitting a buried electric line could even be fatal. It’s that simple.”
NORTH COAST, Calif – With the arrival of spring, many Californians are thinking of starting projects to make their outdoor spaces more livable, and many of these projects will require digging.
To help ensure these projects can proceed safely, and without disruptions to essential utility services that we all depend on to be able to stay connected during the ongoing pandemic, April is recognized as National Safe Digging Month.
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and more than 1,000 other utilities support this nationwide public safety initiative to raise awareness about the importance of calling 811 to have underground utility lines marked in advance of any digging project.
