In a bid to tighten security of all communications networks, the Cabinet Committee on Security on Wednesday announced the National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector, which will mandate service providers to purchase equipment from trusted sources.
Law and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the directive has been framed from the perspective of national security. Considering the need to ensure India s national security, the Cabinet has accorded approval for the National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector, Prasad said.

16The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the setting up of a ‘National Security Committee on Telecom’ that will list ‘trusted and non-trusted’ equipment/devices by vendors, to be used by telecom service providers (TSPs).
Although the government did not specify any country or region, indications are that this is to restrict Chinese vendors from participating in the country s telecom operations.
Recently, the government had banned 200 Chinese mobile apps and also restricted participation of Huawei in 5G trials because of the skirmish between the two countries at the border.

Briefing reporters after the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Law, Telecom and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said a National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector has been framed keeping in mind the national security.
“Considering the need to ensure India’s national security, the Cabinet has accorded approval for the National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector,” Prasad said.

Telecom equipment from China may face fresh curbs after the Cabinet on Wednesday cleared a proposal to secure telecom infrastructure by designating a “trusted source” for the purchase of equipment by service providers.
