A group of 26 high-ranking Hong Kong government officials swore an oath of allegiance to the special administrative region and its Basic Law on Wednesday.
All of the SAR s 12 under secretaries and 14 political assistants attended the oath-taking ceremony, which was witnessed by Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor at the Central Government Complex.

It is safe to say 2020 has been a year of firsts in many ways, and the National Security Law implemented in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, which was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People s Congress on June 30 and took effect immediately, is no doubt the most impactful of its kind concerning Hong Kong in recent memory. Since the law was promulgated expressly to thwart Washington politicians attempts to harm China s interests by messing up Hong Kong through their local proxies, Washington s China hawks have been understandably mad about it and announced a series of sanctions and introduced laws targeting China, including the HKSAR, in the past few months. As always, such unjustifiable acts have failed to intimidate China, including Hong Kong, but hurt US interests one way or another instead.

Hong Kong s legal professionals and civic leaders are backing the prosecution and denial of bail for media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chee-ying as legitimate and have criticized foreign politicians demands for his release as attempts to interfere.
Lai, founder of the city s tabloid-style Apple Daily newspaper, appeared in court on Saturday, charged with colluding with foreign forces or external elements to endanger national security. He is the first in the city to be charged with the offense, under the National Security Law for Hong Kong, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
