Biden to Put Anti-Corruption Efforts at Center of Foreign Policy, With Focus on Crypto and Cybersecurity

The official said major parts of the directive will be focused on financial crimes, including steps to modernize existing anti-corruption laws to confront cryptocurrencies and cybercrime. We are looking at crypto as a means of illicit finance, the official said, but by no means are these new steps limited to new technologies like crypto. The official also said the effort would likely involve updates to the Bank Secrecy Act, the primary means by which law enforcement can track how money moves through financial institutions. Biden directs federal agencies to step up anti-corruption efforts

Senior administration officials said the National Security Study Memorandum (NSSM) builds on efforts already underway at departments like Treasury and Justice to crack down on shell companies and kleptocracy. “The essence of the memorandum … is that the U.S. government is placing the anti-corruption fight at the center of its foreign policy,” a senior administration official told reporters. The NSSM directs a 200-day interagency review that will culminate in a report and recommendations on how the U.S.
