Today’s apology from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is welcomed by the more than 600 families of the Italian-Canadians who were detained in internment camps during the Second World War and approximately 31,000 who were deemed enemy aliens.
Nicola Doganieri was one of the interned, held for more than three years without charge. He was an activist and journalist helping newly arrived immigrants and lobbying for better conditions for them. He was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in front of his children who were asked to get out of their beds in the early hours of the morning so that their rooms could be searched. Without his income, his wife and seven children were left to find a way to survive.
