Trinidad minister: Coast Guard was not involved in deaths of Venezuelans

Article by Social Share Port of Spain – Minister of National Security Stuart Young has denied that personnel from the Trinidad and Tobago Coast guard had any involvement in the circumstances which led to the deaths of a group of Venezuelan nationals. According to Venezuelan authorities, on December 6, 20 Venezuelans left on a boat en route to the twin island republic and, a few days later, several bodies were found near the Venezuelan coastal town of Guiria. Speaking during a sitting of the Senate on Tuesday, the Minister of National Security confirmed that more bodies were recovered on the shoreline. He also sought to dispel rumors that the Coast Guard was involved in the incident that has been linked  human smuggling.

Last Friday, the High Court rejected Singh’s allegations of bias and unfairness about Young’s handling of the exemption process. The allegations were found to be unarguable and without a realistic prospect of success. This is not the first matter successfully defended by Young over the past few months with respect to the closure of T&T’s borders due to the pandemic.
