Most of us would agree that the federal government should treat all citizens fairly, whether we live in small-population states or big ones.
Right now, there are 13 small-population states like Maine that have only three or four Electoral College votes; 12 are ignored by presidential candidates. Only New Hampshire ever seems to be a tossup and garners attention. Ultimately, when it comes to policies enacted once a president is in office, there is a correlation between a state’s importance in terms of Electoral College vote power and the benefits that accrue to the state from the federal government.

Normally a formality, this year’s meetings take on added significance. President Donald Trump has refused to concede, and his effort to overturn just enough votes to claim a false victory in the Electoral College exposed how the flaws of that body threaten the very foundation of American democracy. That peril, though, is opening up new opportunities and challenges for those seeking to move this country to a national popular vote.

There have been hundreds of attempts to reform or abolish the Electoral College since the nation’s founding, but the urgency has picked up in recent years. Twice in the past six elections has the winner of the Electoral College lost the popular vote and twice has such a “wrong winner” only been narrowlyaverted.

When the Electoral College meets Monday, its detractors hope it marks the beginning of the end of a system that twice this century has vaulted the loser of the popular vote to the presidency.
This year s presidential race provides the latest motivation for change to supporters of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. While Democrat Joe Biden scored a decisive win over President Donald Trump in both the popular vote and Electoral College, the race came down to narrow margins in a handful of swing states.
