Sen Miramant introduces bill to adopt National Popular Vote Compact

AUGUSTA Senator David Miramant, D-Camden, introduced a bill this week for Maine to adopt the National Popular Vote Compact. LD 1330, “An Act To Join the National Popular Vote Compact,” was the subject of a public hearing before the Legislature’s Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee. “Democracy starts with the people,” said Sen. Miramant. “The National Popular Vote Compact returns the power to the people when it comes to presidential elections. The person who wins the most votes in our country should win the election. By adopting the National Popular Vote Compact, Maine will be leading the way for other states to give people more voice in electing their president. This bill would allow for more accountability to the people.”

Round two of the public option slugfest advances the bill after nine hours of debate

House lawmakers worked late into the evening and on into the early hours of Friday morning on amendments to House Bill 1232, the so-called public option bill. The bill won approval on a preliminary vote and heads to a recorded vote on Monday. What they had to work with is a strike-below amendment, which essentially amounted to a rewrite of the bill approved by the House Health & Insurance Committee on April 27. And work they did, starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday and continuing on until just after 2:15 a.m. Friday morning with a 35-minute break shortly before midnight. This bill is a narrowly targeted, careful and deliberate approach to a problem we have in our state, particularly in rural Colorado, said bill sponsor Rep. Dylan Roberts, D-Eagle, in closing comments just before 2 a.m. Every single one of us has constituents going to bed tonight, or already gone to bed, worrying about their family s health insurance because of the cost.

The Worst Argument for a National Popular Vote

Leftwing pundits have long predicted the demise of the Republican Party owing to demographic changes. They are quite sure they know what the weather will be in 50 years, so why not claim the same about politics? Unfortunately, panicky types on the right sometimes take the bait, predicting doom and gloom unless their fellow conservatives adopt some less-than-conservative policy position. This is the sales pitch made to conservatives for the National Popular Vote interstate compact (NPV), which would have states give away their electoral votes based on the national popular vote result. The NPV campaign is run and funded by the left, but is desperate to find anyone on the right willing to give them a bipartisan veneer.  Their argument is that Texas is sure to go blue and then, unless we shift to a direct election, Republicans will never win another presidential election. This argument is foolish, insulting, and incorrect.
