DePaul’s Office of Health Promotion and Wellness (HPW) helped students and faculty observe sexual assault awareness month (SAAM) through virtual programming and by welcoming Sara Heidbreder as the new sexual and relationship violence prevention specialist.
To kick off their SAAM campaign, HPW invited Greenlight Family Services a Chicago-based counseling and adoption service with specialized sexual assault therapy for incoming and current college students to lead two workshops for the DePaul community.
The first workshop, hosted on April 6, covered gender-based violence and prevention strategies, and the second on April 22 instructed students on how to support survivors of sexual assault.
Thankfully, Faith noticed her absence and saw Jade in the alleyway before the man was able to assault her, scaring him away.
Although the ED confirmed that Jade experience no physical harm, she was clearly heavily traumatised by the entire experience. She confesses to Faith that she believes she might have been targeted specifically because she is deaf. Why did he pick me? she tearfully said. Did he see me take my hearing aids out and thought I was an easy target? People treat me like I m less than them, not as smart, not as important. I cannot change who I am.
Inside Soap, Gabriella spoke of Jade s reaction to being spiked. It all happens so quickly that it s hard for Jade to pinpoint exactly what s happened. Like the horrible reality for many women who experience their drinks being spiked, Jade s loss of control of her body is a clear indicator that something is very wrong, she explained. I think there s a real struggle to regain control. She s trying to steady herself, and actually realising she can t do that is really scary. There s not much Jade can do, and she s very vulnerable. It all get serious when Faith can t find Jade at all, and she has absolutely no idea where Jade is.
