Oswego County Opportunities SAF Program recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month

FULTON — This April marks the 20th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and this year’s “We Can Build” campaign focuses specifically on the ways people can help build safe online spaces, free of sexual violence. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center recognizes how important virtual spaces have become for connecting with co-workers, friends, family, partners and strangers alike, especially in the past year. With this increase in Zoom meetings and dating apps comes heightened awareness of the unique challenges for combatting sexual violence, as well as more opportunities than ever for online prevention and education. Oswego County Opportunities Services to Aid Families is eager to join the nationwide effort to raise awareness of sexual violence and help create a safer environment for everyone, both on and off-screen.

Promising Young Woman helped me realized I d been raped

It took me 12 years to realize it was rape. For more than a decade, the trauma I experienced the summer after high school stayed filed away in my brain as something to be ashamed of, something to keep secret. In the rape-revenge thriller-slash-comedy, Carey Mulligan plays Cassie Thomas, a 30-year-old woman who’s dedicated her life to teaching men who believe they’re “nice guys” to stop preying on vulnerable women. Night after night, Cassie goes to bars and pretends to be near-collapsing drunk, luring predators into taking her home with them. As each one inevitably begins to sexually assault her, Cassie drops her act to teach them a lesson: You’re not a nice guy, you’re the bad guy.
