Dairy Pride Act

Apr 27, 2021 6:23 AM Lawmakers have reintroduced the Dairy Pride Act, which aims to clear consumer confusion around dairy foods and plant-based products by enhancing accurate labeling information. Alan Bjerga with the National Milk Producers Federation says the main goal of the legislation is to keep the heat on the FDA to follow their own rules about enforcing existing dairy standards of identity. Current Food and Drug Administration regulations define dairy products as being from dairy animals. Although existing federal regulations are clear, the FDA has not enforced these labeling regulations and the mislabeling of plant-based imitation dairy products as ‘milk’, ‘yogurt’ and ‘cheese’ has increased rapidly. Sens. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., chair of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, and U.S. Senator Jim Risch, R-Idaho, reintroduced bipartisan legislation in the Senate to combat what they say is the “unfair practice of mislabeling non-dairy products us

Dairy Industry Goes on the Offensive

(NAFB) – The National Milk Producers Federation is going on the offensive, telling the American people how important dairy is to their diets and everyday lives. Miquela [McKayla] Hanselman is the Manager of Regulatory Affairs with NMPF. She says the argument that dairy isn’t important to human diets would be laughable if it were not so dangerous. Hanselman says several studies have linked dairy consumption to numerous health benefits, including reduced inflammation, improved digestive health, and a healthier immune system. She notes that dairy is especially important to pregnant women as a source of iodine. Hanselman adds dairy should also be a cornerstone of a healthy vegetarian diet.

Dairy Groups Pleased With Reintroduction Of Dairy Pride Act Legislation

2 hours ago in Agriculture Photo: WNAX The Nebraska State Dairy Association is joining the National Milk Producers Federation in hailing the reintroduction in Congress of the Dairy Pride Act. The legislation will bring clear, accurate labeling information for consumers and end harmful mislabeling of dairy foods for plant based products. Nebraska State Dairy Executive Director Kris Bousquet says the mislabeling issue hits more than just dairy producers and needs to be fixed. He says dairy producers have a far better product that is being harmed by the mislabeling that’s been allowed to go on. Bousquet says FDA has the authority to address this but hasn’t so it’s necessary to enact the DAIRY PRIDE Act.
