The rollout of the long awaited national broadband network has begun for Laois, and it promises to give rural isolated premises better broadband than that in towns.
Two areas on the border of Laois are now seeing fibre cables being installed for a 500mb speedy service.
However it will be six years before all of rural Laois and Ireland are connected to the Government s heavily subsidised high speed internet service.
National Broadband Ireland (NBI) gave Laois County Council their latest update this Monday May 10, and the locations and dates for where is first in Laois to get connected.

Over 12,000 rural Laois homes and businesses are still waiting for reliable broadband service, but councillors will get an opportunity to quiz the company contracted to roll it out this week.
National Broadband Ireland is to meet Laois councillors to give a progress update on May 10.
Laois County Council Director of Services Joe Delaney has said that NBI has now finished a year of land surveys in Laois.
“They are now moving from surveys to actual construction. That is a significant move on their progress,” he said.
““Will they answer why homes 20 or 30 meters away from lines are not connected? Make them aware that we will be asking questions,” said Cllr John King.

“We’ve never been good at it,” admits Eir boss Carolan Lennon about its customer service, the great casualty of the telecommunications age. Contacting a telco with a problem is now on a par with going to the dentist – sometimes necessary, but to be avoided if possible.
Last year, at the height of the pandemic, Eir’s customer service function blew a gasket. The company had been forced to move hundreds of customer care agents to remote working and halt recruitment, resulting in a major decline in productivity.
