Solar Philippines Biga Corporation is planning to build a 2 gigawatts (GW) solar plant, combining with 6GW battery energy storage system and 600 megawatts (MW) diesel backup in Nasugbu, Batangas, 115 kilometres south west of Metro Manila, Philippines.
The firm has secured a solar service energy contract from Philippines’ energy department for exclusive right to explore, develop and use the solar energy resources.
The project will be developed on an area of 2,000 hectares. The feasibility study for the proposed project started in 2020.
The firm aims to deliver financial closure of the project in the third quarter of 2022. Construction work is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2022 and complete by the third quarter in 2024.

THE Department of Energy has set new renewable energy (RE) targets in its latest version of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), with RE expected to account for more than half of the Philippines’ power mix by 2040, officials said.
“[The updated NREP proposes RE targets of] 55.8% by 2040, and 37.3% by 2030” in terms of overall share of power generated, Senator Sherwin T. Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate Committee on Energy, told
BusinessWorld in a video call over the weekend.
Mr. Gatchalian said he learned about the new targets in a Friday briefing with officials overseeing the NREP, noting that the ultimate targets are subject to public consultation to be conducted “soon.”
Modern Energy Management (MEM) has been appointed as owner’s representative and technical advisor for Highland Infrastructure’s flagship 250MW wind project in Philippines.
On 27 January, Highland closed a $1m non-recourse loan from SEACEF (Southeast Asia Clean Energy Fund, backed by the Green Climate Fund) to fund development of the project.
Microsoft, the first large corporation to contribute capital to SEACEF, is also now providing support from its own $1bn Climate Innovation Fund into SEACEF.
In 2020, SEACEF approved three projects that represent over 1GW of renewable energy capacity, of which the Highland Infrastructure Philippines project is one.
Highland Infrastructure managing director Ed Douglas said: A number of our strongest projects have matured well and we are now working with investors to fund their construction as well as further development of our pipeline.
