Help Nick Adjust - Galway Bay FM

Galway Bay FM print On October 7th 2020, Nick Murray had spinal surgery after years of struggling with back pain, something that he had always dealt with, without complaint or fuss, he just got on with it. Unfortunately, for Nick, post surgery he was without the ability to walk.   On the 30th of November 2020, Nick was transferred to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoighre, Dublin for intense rehab. An injury like that brings a lot of change to any family. Nick’s family want to ensure that Nick can be as independent as possible, and this means a lot of changes to his home and his life as he knew it.

Bernadette s long fight is over as speech and language therapist recruited for north Wicklow

An adult speech and language therapist is being recruited for north Wicklow, after years without one in the area, and following a three-year battle by local woman Bernadette McGrath. Deputy Steven Matthews received a letter from the HSE last week confirming that recruitment process is under way. This is an issue that I have been pushing for since the start of the summer after meeting with the wife of a man who had suffered an acquired brain injury and required speech and language therapy, said Deputy Matthews. She outlined in detail the lack of services for those broadly in Wicklow but highlighted north Wicklow in particular due to the complete lack of public services, he said. This lady deserves enormous credit for the tireless work she has done on this issue, lobbying the HSE, local TDs and various ministers to advocate for the need of this service in north Wicklow. I ve had the opportunity to speak with her regularly since our first meeting and her tenacity and determi

New chapter about to begin in sorry saga of redress from religious orders

It’s almost 20 years since the State signed an agreement with religious orders that indemnified them from claims arising from decades of child abuse in Church-run institutions. In return the 18 congregations said they would hand over €128m in cash, counselling services, and property transfers. Further voluntary pledges were sought by the government in 2009 in the wake of the publication of the damning Ryan Report on abuse. Somewhat astonishingly the process of collecting the pledges made continues to this day. The overall offers made by religious organisations come to less than a third of the €1.5bn cost of redress so far with just €240m – around 16pc – fully realised to date.

Limerick man who survived shooting caught with gun and bullets

A man shot in the head and chest 10 years ago by a notorious gangland thug has pleaded guilty to possession of a handgun and bullets. Limerick man Daniel Philips (30), who will be sentenced in February, had dumped the gun from a car while being chased by gardai last year. The 30-year-old knows first-hand the effects of gun crime after his recovery from the 2010 gun attack was described as a miracle. Shane Mason, who is linked to the Keane/Collopy gang, got a 16-year- sentence in 2012 for the shooting in which Philips was left for dead. During that case it was heard how Philips had spent a month in a coma after bullet fragments were removed from his skull and chest.
