U.S. Senate discusses overtourism, crowding at Utah's national parks

It's something Utahns have witnessed in their own backyard for years now, as more and more people flock to the state's national parks. And it's something the U.S. Senate held a hearing on this week for one of the first times as more summer visitation numbers exceed expectations. It's overtourism — when more than a manageable amount of visitors come to a park and all that entails from environmental to economic impacts. The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) sits, held a "hearing to review the impacts of overcrowding in our national parks on park resources and visitor use management" on Wednesday.

Texas plan to reduce haze in national parks wouldn't require any new limits on pollution

Texas plan to reduce haze in national parks wouldn’t require any new limits on pollution Fri, 07/02/2021 - 7:38pm Erin Douglas, The Texas Tribune Friday, July 2, 2021 Texas regulators on Wednesday advanced a plan for reducing pollution at its national parks that lacks any new limits on air pollutants that cause haze and disregards concerns voiced by federal agencies and environmentalists alike. Texas’ proposed plan — which is required by the federal government to improve visibility at national parks and other federally protected areas — would not require coal plants in Texas to do anything differently to reduce haze on the federally-managed lands. Environmentalists had hoped Texas would require the power plants, one of the largest contributors to haze, to install pollution-reducing technology, such as scrubbers, that most other states have required for several years.

HIV SOS, Miss Mississippi, ice cream festival: News from around our 50 states

HIV SOS, Miss Mississippi, ice cream festival: News from around our 50 states From USA TODAY Network and wire reports © John Raby/AP Activists, forming the phrase “HIV SOS” are calling on the city of Charleston, W.Va., to declare a public health emergency for new HIV cases and prescription drug overdoses. Alabama Tuscaloosa: Officials in west Alabama’s largest city said they expect to spend          $1.5 million to $4 million repairing damage to water and sewer pipes damaged by Tropical Storm Claudette. The storm dumped between 4 and 8 inches of rain on Jan. 19, causing widespread flash flooding. City officials told The Tuscaloosa News that they’re still repairing water and sewer pipes near the Black Warrior River. A leak there had caused Mayor Walt Maddox to issue a water conservation order for users south of the river, including more than 100,000 residents, the University of Alabama and the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant. Maddox allowed the order to expire Wednesday, saying the line had been patched up and the water supply had stabilized. A contractor is rebuilding a slope that collapsed, damaging raw water intake lines that feed a treatment plant. The most expensive problem might be the failure of a water main and a sewer main near Nucor Corp.’s steel plant, which could cost $1 million. Jarrod Milligan, acting executive director for Tuscaloosa’s Infrastructure and Public Services department, said a private dam appears to have failed, washing out the line. Tuscaloosa officials said they hope to seek federal disaster aid to pay for repairs. Typically, damage would have to rise above a certain threshold before President Joe Biden’s administration would declare a disaster and free up aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Utah's ATV Wars Put Greens and Gas Guzzlers on a Collision Course

Utah's ATV Wars Put Greens and Gas Guzzlers on a Collision Course Daniel Modlin © Provided by The Daily Beast Jordan Siemens/Getty Fans and enthusiasts of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are at war with environmentalists in Utah. And the National Park Service is in the middle of all of it. This battle has been going on across the state for more than a decade, and it’s flared up in plenty of places in Utah, especially the hotspot ATV hub of Moab. But in 2018 the battle took a new turn when the National Park Service (NPS) decided to open up several existing trails in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area for the use of Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV), a category of off-road-capable vehicles that includes 4x4’s, Jeeps, Side by Sides, and ATVs.
