Colorado air-quality regulators have walked back plans to require the early closure of three Colorado coal-fired power plants, including the Craig Station in Moffat County that is responsible for hundreds of jobs in northwest Colorado.
The Air Quality Control Commission on Wednesday unanimously reversed a preliminary decision it made last month to require the Craig Station, the Platte River Power Authorityâs Rawhide plant and Colorado Springsâ Ray Nixon plant to close by the end of 2028 to address regional haze that impacts national parks and wilderness areas.
Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association operates the Craig Station, and has planned to close the plant by the end of 2029. The other two plants reportedly have planned 2030 closing dates.

WASHINGTON Officials have taken the extraordinary step of closing the Washington Monument starting Friday as a precaution after Interior Secretary David Bernhardt who gave a private, nighttime tour to associates this week tested positive for the coronavirus. Interior spokesman Nicholas Goodwin confirmed the temporary closure, saying the department acted after consulting with federal health officials and that Bernhardt led other Trump DOI appointees on the tour earlier this week. Some National Park Service staff at the site said they were near the secretary during his tour and are now in quarantine, leading to a staffing shortage at the monument, Goodwin said.
President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday nominated Democratic U.S. Rep. Deb Haaland of New Mexico to become secretary of the Interior Department after weeks of rumors and speculation â a choice that shatters a historic cultural barrier in the upper echelons of the White House.
Haaland, 60, would be the first Native American not only to head the department that oversees tribal lands and services, but also to become a U.S. Cabinet secretary.
Environmental advocates were quick to laud Bidenâs pick, predicting Haaland would pivot sharply from President Donald Trumpâs fossil fuel-friendly policies within the Interior Department to those that promote renewable energy, combat climate change and protect ecosystems.
