“To Rehoboth on Friday, August 30th, 1878,” the large front-page ad in the Wilmington Morning Herald proclaimed that the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad Company “will run another excursion train to Rehoboth, the sea-side resort of Delaware.”
The train left Wilmington at 6 a.m. and after making over a dozen stops to pick up additional passengers, the train arrived at Rehoboth four and a half hours later. After more than seven hours to enjoy the beach, the excursionists reboarded the train at 6 p.m. for the return to Wilmington.
After Rehoboth Beach was founded in 1873, the railroad came to town five years later. In an era where the most common form of land transportation meant traveling along dusty, unpaved roads behind a team of animals whose barnyard aroma did little to enhance the ambiance of the experience, a railroad coach was a rolling palace.
Muncie High School’s first students met in different locations before finding a semi-permanent home in 1867 in the basement of the original Universalist Church, located at the northeast corner of Madison and Jackson streets (MadJax).
The first Muncie High School building, located where Ivy Tech’s Fisher Building is today, wasn’t completed until 1880. Muncie’s first high school class, a cohort of seven women, graduated in 1868 and included Louise Nelson, Rose Ross, Frone Case, Mary Craig Paine, Florence Anthony, and Lizzie Montgomery.
This first class also included Ida Husted who, in time, became a well-known national leader in the suffragist movement. In fact, I’d argue that Ida Husted is one of the most nationally renowned Munsonians to ever have graced the Magic City.

Formal education was unsystematic and infrequent in Muncie’s first few decades.
The first schoolhouse, a log cabin, was located at the southwest corner of Main and Walnut streets, just north of what is now the Accutech Building. As time wore on, local governments improved education and added several school houses and eventually, a graded system to advance students seeking more scholarly pursuits in life. By the mid-19th century, Muncie’s schools had become a preeminent system in East Central Indiana.
