Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 24) A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Calatagan, Batangas early Saturday morning, state seismologists reported, noting aftershocks were expected. There was no immediate report of damage.
In an earthquake bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the tremor occurred at 4:49 a.m. at a depth of 116 kilometers. It was tectonic in origin, which means there was a movement in the Earth s crust.
It was immediately followed by a magnitude 5.1 quake at 4:57 a.m., which struck at a depth of 107 kms. In a follow-up advisory, Phivolcs upgraded it to magnitude 5.5.
No damage is expected in both events, Phivolcs noted.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 24) Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been lifted in Batanes as Typhoon Fabian headed out of the country’s area of responsibility, the state weather bureau said.
In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Fabian was out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility at 11 p.m. on Friday.
As of 4 a.m., the typhoon was located 640 kilometers north northeast of Itbayat, Batanes – packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said the government continued to monitor the situation and assured that disaster relief efforts have been initiated.
“We are closely monitoring the weather situation, especially flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, where heavy rainfall warning brought by the southwest monsoon has been raised,” Roque said in a statement Saturday.

A report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) indicated that as of 10 a.m., a total of 3, 077 families or 13, 225 individuals were in evacuation centers. All the evacuees are accommodated in the city s 28 evacuation centers, according to an NDRRMC Facebook post.
