NATIONAL NEWS - A KwaZulu-Natal magistrate was on Friday released on R2 000 bail after appearing in court on charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and defeating the ends justice.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said the 56-year-old magistrate, Bonginkosi Herman Mtshali, was arrested on Thursday following an intensive investigation by the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit (NTACU) into the irregular manner in which he obtained his driving licence.
Mtshali on Friday appeared at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court.
The corporation said a magistrate and prosecutor from areas outside of Empangeni were arranged to lead proceedings because Mtshali works at the same court.

A VIP protection unit officer and a flying squad police officer have been arrested for alleged involvement with a syndicate hijacking trucks on the freeways in Gauteng.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said it viewed this as a major blow dealt to the syndicate by the national traffic anti-corruption unit.
The two police officers and a civilian were arrested in Johannesburg on Tuesday, shortly after they had allegedly hijacked a truck.
Three people allegedly linked to a truck hijacking syndicate have been arrested.
Among the three are a metro police officer and a police officer.
They were arrested after being spotted driving a vehicle with false licence plates.
A hijacking syndicate allegedly responsible for targeting trucks on Gauteng highways has been dealt a significant blow after three men were arrested.

Johannesburg - Two police officers and a civilian have been arrested over allegations that they are part of a truck hijacking syndicate operating in Gauteng have been arrested.
The three were arrested in Johannesburg on Tuesday by the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit (NTACU), a division of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
NTACU believes that the arrest of the three has dealt a major blow to the syndicate.
According to the RTMC’s Simon Zwane, a member of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s VIP Protection Unit, a member of the SAPS Flying Squad and a civilian were spotted driving a vehicle fitted with false number plates in the Johannesburg CBD.
