Vanguard News Gunshots heard as Hausa, Yoruba youths clash in Lagos On By Sylvester Kwentua What began as a minor clash between Hausa motorcyclists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in the Iyana-Iba area of Ojo, Lagos, quickly degenerated into a tribal clash, early Monday morning, as Hausa and Yoruba youths confronted themselves, wielding dangerous weapons. The fracas according to eye witnesses began when Hausa motorcyclists gathered themselves to protest constant harassment by the road union members, after an Hausa motorcyclist was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death. The fight which began with exchange of stones between members of the union and the motorcyclists, soon degenerated into a full blown crisis, as sporadic gunshots were heard at the scene.

For over an hour, the motorcyclists (popularly known as Okada) blocked the expressway with burning tyres while wielding sticks and machetes to attack defiant drivers. Many of the commuters resorted to trekking while shop owners who had previously opened for business had to shut down and run for safety. Witnesses said the fracas began after the NURTW increased the levies of Okada riders in the area, a move the commercial motorcyclists kicked against. One motorcyclist was allegedly killed in the ensuing violence.

Gunshots as violence erupts near Lagos State University

Eyewitnesses said sporadic gunshots were heard as security operatives made efforts to bring the situation under control. Amateur videos of the incident were circulated on different social media platforms. The clash is reportedly between members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and some motorcycle riders in the area. The crisis has forced the management of LASU to close the gates of the school as students and staff have been urged to remain within the premises.
