Volunteers in Milan participated in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday, April 24th, collecting expired prescription drugs at the Milan Police Station.
It s part of a national effort from the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Volunteers say they collected about two garbage bags full of expired medications. They say that s down from years past, but one volunteer says it s still important to go through cabinets at home and properly dispose of anything that is expired. Those are all hazardous after a while and you need to get, dispose of them, keep them out of the reach of children, Volunteer Pat Vincent says.
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa Hy-Vee, Inc. announced today that all Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations throughout Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin will participate in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 24, according to a media release from the company.According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 87,200 people in the U.S. died from drug overdoses, primarily related to opioids, in a 12-month period from September to September 2020, with the largest increase in deaths occurring in April and May 2020 right after the COVID-19 pandemic began.Since 2019, drug take-back receptacles have been available inside all Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations year-round to provide customers a secure place to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired drugs in communities throughout the Midwest and remove them from the environment. If your medicine cabinet is full of expired or unwanted medications, law enforcement officials across Iowa encourage you to safely dispose of them Saturday during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
The bi-annual effort is held each April and October and has led to the collection of 7,000 tons of unwanted prescription and nonprescription medication since it was established by the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2010, according to a news release.
This year there are at least a dozen sites in central Iowa where medications can be dropped Saturday. Most will be open between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., although some, including the Urbandale Police Department, will open at 8 a.m.
