On March 30, Chinese lawmakers passed legislation that will dramatically overhaul Hong Kong’s electoral system. That legislation which takes the form of amendments to Hong Kong’s Basic Law does not stand alone: It appears to be the third in a recent raft of laws that consolidate Beijing’s control over Hong Kong, formally a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
To better understand the election amendments and their potential effects, it’s important to understand both the current context and prior developments that have led to the legislation’s adoption.

Tokyo [Japan], April 5 (ANI): JapanForeign MinisterToshimitsu Motegi on Monday urged China to halt its illegal intrusions into its territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea and address the human rights issues in Xinjiang and the ongoing political situation in Hong Kong.
In a telephonic conversation with Chinese Foreign MinisterWang Yi that lasted about 90 minutes, Motegi expressed strong concerns about the ongoing situations in China, reported Kyodo News.

Hong Kong, April 4 (ANI): Under China s overhaul of the electoral system of Hong Kong, a vetting committee has been set up to screen out unpatriotic candidates, which will consider previous actions and words by an individual, according to the city s justice minister.
Hong Kong s Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah said the new committee would receive advice from the police s national security unit and a commission led by the chief executive and supervised by Beijing, before making a decision, reported South China Morning Post (SCMP).
