When you hear the term that someone is on the autism spectrum, it means many things to many people. It is called a spectrum because every autistic person has a different level of ability or deficit in the areas of social skills, sensory sensitivity, cognitive function, motor skills and executive function. The unique combination of ability and deficit in each of these areas is exactly why it is so difficult to first diagnose and then properly support individuals on the spectrum. It is why the more-than 5 million Americans on the spectrum to date have been over 80% under- or unemployed.
April is National Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Acceptance month or National Autism Awareness Month. This month is designated to promote awareness of autism and autism spectrum disorders and shine light on the unique abilities that people with autism bring.
Autism is a neurological condition that is typically diagnosed by the age of three, but may be diagnosed later in life. Children with autism, just like any other child, vary significantly and display a wide range of conditions. Autism often affects a person’s communication abilities, impact social skills, nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Autism is known as a spectrum disorder and people with autism each have a unique experience with their own challenges and strengths. Federal neurodiversity pilot plans to improve the lives of all feds 6 hours ago A Neurodiverse Federal Workforce pilot aims to make agencies think about how their hiring and retention practices could be better structured to appeal to all kinds of candidates. (iStock/Getty Images) In September 2019, MITRE Corporation and several academic partners were awarded a grand prize of $300,000 from the Government Effectiveness Advanced Research Center challenge to establish a Neurodiverse Federal Workforce pilot, with the goal of assisting agencies in how to better attract, hire and retain talent on the autism spectrum. That pilot ultimately partnered with Melwood, a nonprofit for recruiting employees with disabilities, and with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in June 2020 to take in and ultimately hire the first four candidates that were part of the pilot program.
