Listen now. Saturday, April 24th, is National Drug Takeback Day. Police departments in the region will be collecting old and expired medications for safe disposal. Here’s what you can do to clear out your medicine cabinet.
Lt. Tony Williams, with the Carbondale Police Department, said the event is critical for safe disposal of drugs. Flushing unused prescriptions can contaminate the water supply, while keeping them at home can also be harmful.
“Prescription medications are just a such a really broadly abused thing, and often times it l be family members or friends who develop problems with prescriptions and to have them available in medicine cabinets or other places where people aren’t paying attention, they’re expired, people forget about them, unfortunately they end up falling into the hands of folks who have problems and might abuse them,” Williams said.

It’s no doubt most of us have old and unused prescription medication stored somewhere in our homes. While the medication may have been prescribed properly to assist us with a medical condition at one time, they do have their own dangers if they are used for the wrong reasons.
According to a 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million misused prescription stimulants and 5.9 million misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives that year.
A majority of those misused drugs were obtained from family and friends, sometimes without their knowledge.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, along with local and state law enforcement, have been working for years to address such issues which often lead to drug addiction.
It s time to get rid of those old expired prescription drugs. You know, the ones crowding up your medicine cabinet that you don t use anymore.
National Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, April 24, and both the Temple Police Department and the Copperas Cove Police Department will collect unused, expired medication.
This is a great opportunity to dispose of old medications safely and responsibly.
According to a press release from the City of Temple:
The public may drop off potentially dangerous prescription medications to the Temple Police Department lobby, 209 E. Avenue A, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
