How to get around in Scotland

How to get around in Scotland Lonely Planet Editors These are the transportation options for getting around in Scotland © elxeneize / Shutterstock Transportation in Scotland can be expensive compared to the rest of Europe. Through a combination of public transportation, it is possible to travel around Scotland without a car. However, a car will offer you the greatest flexibility on your journey, allowing you to visit more remote regions at your own pace. There is an extensive rail network and frequent departures in central Scotland, but only a few lines in the northern Highlands and southern Scotland. Buses are cheaper and slower than trains, but useful for more remote regions. A network of car ferries links the mainland with the islands of western and northern Scotland, and domestic airlines serve some of the islands too. Traveline Scotland is a good source of information and up-to-date timetables on all forms of transit.

Comeback announcement: Ireland will reopen on June 2

By Judy Enright, Special to BostonIrish May 3, 2021 Comeback announcement: Ireland will reopen on June 2 Thankfully, there is light on the tourism horizon in Ireland! Like the rest of the world, life on the island and its tourist industry have struggled with Covid restrictions. But vaccines, masks, and common sense have introduced hope into what might otherwise have been a dreary economic picture. REOPENING: JUNE 2 Recently, Achill Tourism in Co. Mayo posted this: “Following the government’s announcement … we now have a date to work toward for the reopening of tourism businesses. We are counting down to June 2 when hotels, guesthouses, self-catering accommodation, and B&Bs can open, closely followed by pubs and restaurants for outdoor drinks and dining on the 7th of June.”
