Climate Solutions: Saving Our Living Planet

Several animal populations are in danger of extinction. The impact reaches far beyond the potential loss of iconic species like tigers, rhinos, and whales. Animal extinction contributes to the undoing of our planet's sustainability, the balance of biodiversity that affects every living being on Earth. Washington Post Live will share the stories and perspectives of individuals working to protect the lives of endangered animals around the world. We will bring together scientists, conservationists, and wildlife activists who are championing new proposals for protecting the health of our living planet, combating deforestation, and tackling continuing harmful wildlife trades. Join us on Tuesday, March 9 at 10:00am ET.

RRI develops platform to detect effect of prolonged alcohol exposure on RBCs RRI develops platform to detect effect of prolonged alcohol exposure on RBCs 06 March 2021 | News The high-resolution platform can be tuned for a point-of-care screening of several other blood-related conditions in the future Image credit- shutterstock.com Scientists have custom-made a platform to detect the effect of prolonged alcohol exposure on Red Blood Cells (RBCs) through high-resolution measurements of their size. The high-resolution platform that shows the reduction in size of RBCs on alcohol exposure can be tuned for a point-of-care screening of multiple conditions that alter the size and count of RBCs in blood.

A way to track endangered wild dogs

A way to track endangered wild dogs A way to track endangered wild dogs Bangalore Mirror Bureau / Updated: Mar 2, 2021, 06:00 IST Scientists from the city-based Wildlife Conservation Society–India and National Centre for Biological Sciences ( NCBS) along with other universities have, for the first time, developed a scientifically robust method to estimate the Asiatic wild dog dhole population. The dhole is among the carnivore species that are threatened with extinction and its population numbers unknown. This large carnivore is found in the forests of India and till now, there were no methods available to reliably estimate dhole populations. With this new study, scientists developed a method to estimate dhole numbers using genetic information and advanced population models.

Is Atmanirbhar Bharat Holding Up India s Genome Sequencing Program?

Is Atmanirbhar Bharat Holding Up India s Genome Sequencing Program? India s newly launched programme to widely and rapidly sequence genomes of the novel coronavirus has already run into major hurdles. Illustration: ColiN00B/pixabay Bengaluru: Rakesh Mishra, the director of Hyderabad’s Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), is frustrated. CCMB has been sequencing SARS-CoV-2 viral genomes since the COVID-19 pandemic began – initially as part of its own research program and since December 2020 as part of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a group of ten labs the government put together to ramp up sequencing across to India. To do its work, Mishra’s team needs specialised plastic containers and reagents that go into sequencing machines. But buying them has become needlessly complicated in the last year, taking time away from his lab’s core jobs, according to Mishra.
