A near doubling in annual federal appropriated funding levels for core nuclear research and development activities is needed to ensure the commercial deployment of US advanced reactors in the 2030s, a task force commissioned by the American Nuclear Society (ANS) has concluded. The group said the additional funding will help meet the Biden Administration s climate goals.

The ANS Task Force on Public Investment in Nuclear Research and Development brought together over 20 technical experts - from US Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories, universities, private developers, utilities, suppliers and professional divisions within ANS. The Task Force is co-chaired by Mark Peters, executive vice president for Laboratory Operations at Battelle, and Christina Back, vice president of the Nuclear Technologies and Materials Division at General Atomics.
Idaho Falls is poised to become a major center for the development of new nuclear reactors.
The National Reactor Innovation Center, a partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy and private companies to test new nuclear reactors, was created as part of the 2018 Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities Act, which was shepherded through Congress by Idaho Sens. Jim Risch and Mike Crapo. In 2019, DOE announced the center will be sited at Idaho National Laboratory.
âThis is a way of planting the flag even deeper here for being the lead place for the development of the nuclear industry, not only in America but in the world,â Risch said at the time.
Simpson secured funding for programs vital to Idaho including full funding of PILT, Sage Grouse Initiative, Dairy Research, TRIO Program and INL Funding
Washington, D.C. â Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson supported the Senate Amendment to H.R. 133, the Bipartisan-Bicameral Omnibus & COVID Relief Package, that will fund the government through Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 and provide COVID relief for Americans. This critical legislation marks the conclusion of several months of negotiations and passed the House of Representatives in two sections, the first with a vote of 327-85, and the second with a vote of 359-53. The bill is also expected to pass in the Senate, and President Trump said he will sign the legislation as soon as it arrives on his desk.
