A tornado touched down in the Atlanta area on Monday morning as severe weather threatened more than 100 million people from the southern Plains through the Mid-Atlantic.
A tornado warning was issued at about 10:30 a.m. and lasted until 11:15 a.m. ET, with about 450,000 people in its potential path, according to the National Weather Service in Atlanta.
The extent of the storm s damage wasn t clear early Monday afternoon. Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms tweeted photos of downed trees in her neighborhood in southwest Atlanta, while Dru Ghegan, the owner of Bonded Service Warehouse in Fulton County, shared photos that show the building suffered significant damage.

Chances for tornadoes increase in Texas and Oklahoma

Severe weather will ramp up this evening and overnight tonight in the Southern Plains.
This severe storm risk has increased since this morning thanks to the warm air staying in place for a longer time: “The culprit is this cold front being 6 hours slower. Now a more volatile combo of instability and lift occurs over us,” National Weather Service in Fort Worth said in a tweet.
This region has been dry throughout the day, allowing for temperatures to rise into the 80s across northeastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma. This heat, in addition to the high humidity, are two important ingredients needed for severe weather, and it’s this region where the Storm Prediction Center is most concerned for tornadoes.

One man is dead after a tree fell on a car as a tornado touched down in the Atlanta area on Monday. Severe weather threatened more than 100 million people from the southern Plains through the Mid-Atlantic.
The man died in Douglasville, Georgia, west of Atlanta. The Douglas County Fire Department responded to reports of a tree on a car with a person inside around 10:36 a.m., according to a news release from county officials. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered the driver trapped inside the vehicle with power lines and a tree on the vehicle, Douglas County communications director Rick Martin said in the release. Firefighters had to extricate the driver who we are only identifying as a male at this time until next of kin are notified.
