It s late January, and less than 4% of the surface area of the Great Lakes is covered with ice. The lakes are almost entirely ice-free, and there s not much to suggest that s about to change soon. Water temperatures have been running anomalously above average, and relatively mild weather looks to stick around at least into February.

Traverse City area snowfall so far is almost unbelievably low

It’s almost unbelievable how low some of the seasonal snowfall totals so far are around the Traverse City area and other parts of northwest Lower Michigan. For some cities, snow numbers are only 30 percent of normal.
I’m using some snowfall totals from cooperative observers. These are people who volunteer to take weather observations daily. It allows us to get snowfall totals from smaller cities across the Grand Traverse area and northwest Lower Michigan.
As of Jan. 19, here are some seasonal snowfall totals around the usually snowy northwest Lower region.
