Disheartening: As Colorado s drought continues, family ag operations feel the heat

Chelsea Self / Post Independent At the Rocking U7 Ranch near Collbran, Del and Lynne Sherrod sold half their herd of Black Angus last year due to drought conditions. They’re likely to cut the herd by half once again as persistent drought conditions have seriously restricted the Sherrod’s supply of irrigation water. The 120 head that remain are vocal about letting Lynne Sherrod know they’re not fans of the drought diet, where supplemental feed has taken the place of their luscious grass and hay meals. Crews clean up Glenwood Canyon mudslides, but more rainfall in this week s forecast

Chelsea Self / Post Independent Cleanup of a mudslide that forced the closure of Interstate 70 from Dotsero to Rifle wrapped up Monday evening, more than 24 hours after the debris went across the highway. Colorado Department of Transportation crews reopened the eastbound lanes around 3 p.m. Monday, and then westbound lanes opened three hours later. A mudslide about 5 p.m. Sunday closed the canyon, which also shut down Saturday because of debris flows onto the interstate. The rainfall event that occurred over Grizzly Creek Fire burn scar dropped about a half-inch of rain over the course of 35 minutes Sunday afternoon, according Tom Renwick, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

Western Slope in line for a wetter-than-normal July

Rain on Sunday afternoon kept river users off the Yampa River through Steamboat Springs, but rain in recent days has actually boosted flows back above 200 cubic feet per second for the first time in 10 days. (Photo by Dylan Anderson) There have been five Red Flag warning days so far this year in Routt County, four of them coming last week when the Muddy Slide Fire started and grew. These warnings have come at a faster pace than last year, as the National Weather Service in Grand Junction issued just nine Red Flag warnings that affected Routt County in all of 2020.
