Michigan’s temperature normals were adjusted, and they show the global trend

We have a new normal. That’s been an often spoken phrase recently. Well it is actually true when we talk about “normal high and low temperatures.”
While we meteorologists like to use the easily understood term “normal” high temperature, I’m often reminded by other mathematicians we should be saying average high temperature.
In weather we use a 30-year average for determining what a normal day is at any time of the year. Every 10 years NOAA chops off the oldest 10 years in the 30 year group of temperatures and adds on the newest 10 years.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) â The weather has been pretty dry in Michigan recently, apart from some rain showers this week. But we have not had enough precipitation to ease dry conditions across the state.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, nearly all of the lower peninsula is currently in a Moderate Drought. It comes after a winter season that was drier than normal and those dry conditions have continued for much of the spring season so far.
Meteorologist Nathan Jeruzal with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids told FOX-17 that the current timing of these drought conditions in Michigan has some positives and negatives.
