A flash flood watch is in effect for the region from Thursday through Friday morning as rain and thunderstorms are expected, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
The weather service said a slow moving cold front will produce widespread showers and thunderstorms from Thursday morning through Friday morning.Â
âRainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches will be common, but local amounts of 4 to 5 inches could occur in the northern plateau and higher terrain of Southwest Virginia and the East Tennessee mountains. This will likely result in some localized flash flooding,â the NWS said Wednesday afternoon.
The weather service urges motorists not to drive into flood waters, saying most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

After heavy rain and lightning Tuesday morning, get ready for another round or two of strong thunderstorms before the day ends, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
There were advisories in place early this morning, like the flood advisory for most of Knox County and areas north of Oak Ridge, plus a flash flood watch for Blount and Sevier counties.
Now much of East Tennessee is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 1 p.m. Strong winds and hail are possible, and a tornado could develop along the Cumberland Plateau and in southeast Tennessee. Parts of Knoxville could see between 2 and 4 inches of rain before the storms move out.
