A major snowstorm hit the US east coast during the early hours, creating extra challenges in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic and a mass vaccination rollout taking place across the region.
The winter storm, moving over New York, Pennsylvania and other northeastern states, leaves millions facing more than a foot of snow a week before Christmas, potentially disrupting coronavirus testing and delaying holiday deliveries.
It also left more than 60 million people under bad weather warnings from Maine to South Carolina.
New York City, if hit as badly by the storm as predicted, would be facing the most snow from one storm in more than four years, after it was hit with two feet in January 2016.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A major winter storm was making its way up the U.S. East Coast on Wednesday, ready to deliver a disruptive blow to the region, with up to 2 feet (60 cm) of snow in parts of the Northeast and freezing rain in some Mid-Atlantic areas, forecasters said.
The Nor easter, which was already bringing a wintry mix of precipitation to Virginia and North Carolina early in the day, was moving up the coast that is home to more than 50 million people before exiting the Boston area on Thursday afternoon, they said.
Meteorologist Bob Oravec of the National Weather Service s Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, said the forecast could have been worse if not for the speed at which the system was traveling.

The word ânorâeasterâ usually elicits images of streets blanketed in heaps of snow and power lines defeated by intense winds. But what, exactly, makes a storm a norâeaster?
âThereâs no strict definition,â said Rich Otto, a meteorologist with the National Weather Serviceâs Weather Prediction Center. âItâs sort of a loose term.â
Broadly speaking, the term characterizes a weather system in which winds just off the East Coast collide with surface winds from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States amid areas of low pressure.
