Galaxies have magnetic fields, too! Images here | Space

February 16, 2021 Until recently, magnetic fields in the outskirts of galaxies were too faint to be detected. Although it’s still not clear what causes them or how they’re maintained, astronomers have started to create images of their observations of galaxies’ magnetic fields producing beautiful aurora-like effects. See them here. View larger. | Galaxy NGC 5775 and its magnetic field are seen together in this composite image, which is made via radio data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) near Socorro, New Mexico, superimposed on an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope. This composite won 2nd place in a National Radio Astronomy Observatory image contest to celebrate VLA’s 40-year anniversary. Image via Jayanne English/ NRAO/ HST /J.Irwin et al.

Space Radar on Earth Sees the Apollo 15 Landing Site on the Moon

autoevolution 13 Feb 2021, 9:56 UTC · by In July 1971, Apollo 15 took off from Earth as the ninth such crewed missions heading for the Moon. It landed there, in the Hadley Rille region, and became the first human expedition to another world to use motorized means of transportation: the famed lunar rover. 1 photo The Moon is the closest object in space to Earth, and has been the target of intense study ever since humans became aware of it being a celestial body. But seeing its surface as a radar-generated image is not something that happens every day. Back in November 2020, the National Science Foundation’s Green Bank Observatory (GBO) used its Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in West Virginia to do exactly that. It used the Apollo 15 landing site as a target, and when it was all done, it got back the image you see as the main photo of this piece.

Green Bank Telescope Is so Powerful it Can Reach Distant World s Surfaces

11 February 2021, 7:20 am EST By With the technology we have today, it is still challenging for scientists to have a closer look at surfaces of near-Earth celestial objects, but thanks to an upgrade done to a radio telescope in West Virginia, scientists were given an unprecedented look at the moon. (Photo : Sophia Dagnello, NRAO/GBO/Raytheon/AUI/NSF/USGS) The radio telescope signals were able to create high-quality images of the surface of the moon. Successful Radio Telescope Test Delivers Image of the Moon According to Futurism, the Green Bank Telescope had been upgraded with a new radio transmitter that was developed by military contractor Raytheon.
