Scribes to honor Danding, two others with Lifetime Achievement Award

Published March 10, 2021, 6:37 PM Three very important persons considered among the pillars of Philippine sports are going to be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the SMC-PSA (Philippine Sportswriters Association) virtual Awards Night. The late Ambassador and former San Miguel Corp. Chairman and CEO Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojuangco, one-time Gintong Alay Project Director Jose A. Romasanta, and former PBA Commissioner Renauld ‘Sonny’ Barrios are the three new recipients of the special award to be handed out by the country’s oldest media organization in the March 27 event at the TV5 Media Center. The three respected personalities join unanimous Athlete of the Year choice Yuka Saso in the short but compact list of awardees which will be recognized in the first ever PSA virtual awards rite co-presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Cignal TV, with 1-Pacman Partylist and Rain or Shine as major backers.

Broke BNSC suspends non-critical events

AFFECTED: Sporting activity Government through the Ministry of Youth Empowerment Sport and Culture Development has directed Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) to reprioritise spending. As a result, non-critical events, activities and programmes have been deferred to the next financial year of 2021/2022. According to the BNSC Caretaker Chief Executive, Tuelo Serufho, they have been affected by this exercise to the extent that it will not receive the balance of its grant in the current financial year. He said this is the exception of requests for unavoidable costs such as those for rentals, salaries and utilities. “We therefore inform all National Sport Associations that the commission will not be able to honour any request in March even if the NAS has a positive balance. The instruction was relayed during an impromptu virtual general meeting with all sporting codes this past Thursday. According to those who attended the meeting, sporting codes were informed that the economy had taken a knock, thus affecting the government funding. The affiliates were however informed that the order to stop funding activities would not affect those sporting activities described as ‘necessary.’  “We were informed that only national teams whose participation in competitions has been confirmed will be allowed to go ahead with activities,” a source said. “Even for them to be considered, there should be evidence that there will be financial repercussions if they do not compete,” the source continued.

PSC training director, karate chief at PSA Forum

Published January 18, 2021, 7:35 PM Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) National Training Director Marc Velasco and Karate Pilipinas Inc. President Richard Lim share the spotlight in Tuesday’s session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) webcast Forum. Velasco will give his inputs about the bubble training being done by three National Sports Associations (NSAs) inside the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna in preparation for their respective Olympic qualifying tournaments. Lim, whose NSA is among those in Laguna, also talks about the karatekas’ bid for an Olympic berth as well as the postponed staging of the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) of which he is the Chef De Mission of the Philippine delegation.
