Coastal News Today | Ma - Massachusetts Residents Reject Federal Flood Insurance Program

The few people with flood insurance in town will lose their policies in July, and the town will become ineligible for some federal disaster grants now that voters have rejected the new flood maps. Monday s town meeting flew through the four articles on the special town meeting including a $68.7 million operating budget, a special fund to hold fees collected from marijuana dispensaries, a policy to use the money and authorization to spend $96,000 in marijuana revenues on two new police cruisers. Residents also approved $380,000 in general funds for road upgrades and $120,000 in general funds for a new police department roof. When town meeting reached new flood maps and zoning bylaws, the town meeting ground to a halt. Passing the articles is required by the federal government for the town and town residents to continue to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Bill Would Protect Long Islanders From Paying More For Flood Insurance

Steven Senne / AP U.S. Representatives Kathleen Rice (D-NY) and Andrew Gabarino (R-NY) have introduced bipartisan legislation that would help protect Long Island homeowners from increased premiums that are included in changes to the National Flood Insurance Program. The legislation would provide an analysis of new flood insurance rates at least six months before any changes can be made to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s program. The bill would also prohibit changes to FEMA’s flood-risk assessment during and after the COVID-19 emergency declaration. Changes to the National Flood Insurance Program include a new flood risk rating system to calculate new flood insurance premiums based on several factors such as heavy rainfall, frequency of flooding and elevation. That could increase bills of up to $20 a month.

Meanwhile, California and parts of the Southwest are experiencing drought conditions, which is conducive to wildfires. Last year, there were 22 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disaster events in the U.S., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
